Pittards trading partnership with Ethiopia goes back almost 100 years and it has been manufacturing leather there in its own tannery since 2005. The majority is shipped overseas to premium worldwide brands, making it the leading leather exporter in Ethiopia but today an increasing amount of leather is supplied to Pittards own manufacturing units in Addis Ababa, which make work and dress gloves.
In establishing this facility Pittards is leading the drive into the manufacturing of finished goods in Ethiopia It is an operation that adds value, creates employment and develops the skills base – memorably supplying the Ethiopian Olympic and Paralympic teams with jackets.Pittards work in Ethiopia
Working with local charities such as GOAL and Beyond the Orphanage, Pittards has been able to create opportunities for disadvantaged young people to enter the workforce, gaining valuable skills and experience. Pittards work at its tannery location also extends beyond the commercial and deep into the local community. An on-site clinic looks after the workers and their families and support for the school is ongoing through the building of new classrooms, and establishing a supply of books to the library.
